Sinai Hospital

This session will describe Sinai Hospital’s quality improvement initiative to standardize smoke evacuation across operating rooms by redesigning workflow, supply chain processes, education, and multidisciplinary accountability. The project included removal of non-evacuation electrocautery pencils, standardization of smoke evacuation setup, competency-based education, champion-supported coaching, and leadership support from surgery and anesthesia.

Participants will learn how a system-level approach helped shift smoke evacuation from an optional practice to the default standard of care, resulting in improved compliance, universal device availability, completed nursing education, and reported reductions in odor and irritation.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the occupational health risks associated with surgical smoke exposure in the operating room.
2. Identify common workflow, supply chain, and cultural barriers that contribute to inconsistent smoke evacuation practices.
3. Explain how Sinai Hospital implemented a system-based approach to standardize smoke evacuation as the default operating room workflow.
4. Discuss strategies to sustain and spread smoke-free OR practices, including education, leadership support, compliance monitoring, and supply chain alignment.
