Hospital-acquired pressure injuries are among the most preventable yet persistent sources of patient harm. This session will showcase how UPMC Western Maryland implemented a multidisciplinary, hospital-wide initiative that used data, root cause analysis, evidence-based prevention strategies, and workflow redesign to dramatically reduce HAPI rates across the continuum of care. Attendees will learn how cross-functional collaboration, targeted interventions, enhanced documentation, and continuous monitoring helped the organization outperform national benchmarks while creating a sustainable model for pressure injury prevention that can be adapted by other healthcare organizations.

Jill LeMay is a Registered Nurse with 25 years of experience; most of which has been spent in the Emergency Department, at various levels ranging from staff nurse to clinical director. Patient safety has always been a priority and a passion in her work. In 2023, she had the opportunity to make a broader impact by joining the Patient Safety and Risk Management team at UPMC Western Maryland.
As she began her formal patient safety journey, it was evident to me that ancillary departments can and should be engaged in partnering with inpatient nursing providers to improve patient care and outcomes. Pressure injury prevention posed the perfect opportunity to engage many different team members. We All Have Skin in the Game: Preventing Pressure Injuries Together is the result of that collaboration.
