Workplace violence in healthcare is a growing threat, with hospital staff experiencing injury rates nearly five times higher than workers in other industries. Verbal threats—often a warning sign for escalation—are especially common in high-stress areas like emergency departments and behavioral health units.
In response, in this session, Adventist White Oak Medical Center will highlight the implementation of Code Bronze, a proactive protocol designed to support staff when encountering verbally aggressive but non-combative individuals. Launched in 2024, Code Bronze enables team members to quickly summon security using clear activation criteria and a rapid response process, supported by staff training, standardized documentation, and post-event support.
Participants will learn how early intervention can reinforce a zero-tolerance culture for aggression, improve staff safety and morale, and strengthen patient care. The program also demonstrates how a practical, compassionate approach can reduce organizational risk and align with high-reliability and national safety expectations.
